The Dr Tom Dooley Foundation is dedicated to the vision of Dr Tom Dooley, MD (1927-1961), who galvanized Americans to help the people of the Third World improve their own medical care. Tom, therefore, was as much of a trainer as he was a practitioner. Using his methods he was able to achieve astounding success in treating disease in a refugee population. In 1956 he published a book called Deliver Us From Evil, and it was widely read in the US population. It told the true story of what the Communists were like from his experience helping the refugees. Approximately one third of the 600,000 refugess processed had traumatic injuries from Communists forcing them off their land, to make them refugees in the first place. It was widely read as part of Cold War studies. In the 1959 Gallup Poll (a polling of Americans since 1935) Dr Tom Dooley was voted the seventh most admired person in the world. Number ten was General Douglas MacArthur. Dwight Eisenhower was number one.
