Book Three

Book Three  Dr Lavely gives an introduction to book three and explains its function and importance. The book consists largely of an interview with Larry Aggens, one of Tom's best friends.  They met in the Navy and never lost touch with each other.  The interview took place in Wilmette IL at Larry's home on October 20, 2013.  Larry donated copies of letters from Tom and him between 1957-1959, and five quarter inch reels of audio tape of Tom in various venues, radio, lecture, and on tape at ease at Larry's parents home.



 

Chapter One An interview with Larry Aggens, one of Tom's best friends. This relates their first meeting. August 1, 1954.

 

Chapter Two An interview with Larry Aggens, one of Tom's best friends. This relates the events surrounding Tom's performance of his duty to educate the ship's crew about the ways to avoid venereal disease. This is when Tom endeared himself to the crew.

 

Chapter Three An interview with Larry Aggens, one of Tom's best friends. This relates the voyage to North Vietnam from Tokyo. Immunizations were required by the Navy for this mission. Tom was in charge of doing it for the USS Montague.

 

Chapter Four An interview with Larry Aggens, one of Tom's best friends. This relates the Captain's trip to the shore to greet the French Commander. Tom was taken because he was the only one in the fleet that spoke fluent French, and Larry was in charge of the skipper's dinghy.

 

Chapter Five An interview with Larry Aggens, one of Tom's best friends. This relates the day that Tom told Larry he had to see the Admiral, Admiral Sabin, because "he was doing it all wrong."

 

Chapter Six In this video Larry sums up the operation and relates the day that he saw someone die from malnutrition. It was unexpected to Larry though predicted by Tom about thirty minutes earlier. He then talks about what happened when he got home to Chicago"

 

Chapter Seven An interview with Larry Aggens, one of Tom's best friends. This relates the discharge of Larry back to Chicago. He could not forget the images of what he had witnessed, and felt obliged to do something to help the people he had met in Vietnam. He discovered Multiple Purpose Food.

 

 

Chapter Eight An interview with Larry Aggens, one of Tom's best friends. This relates to his processing of the things he had witnessed and experiences that he had had which caused him to transform his thoughts and realizations into action with the Meals for Millions Foundation."

 

Chapter Nine An interview with Larry Aggens, one of Tom's best friends. This relates the time that Larry brought Tom to his high school for give the early morning opening lecture. Tom drew attention with piano playing as the kids filed in. This video concludes with the actual taped speech by Tom Dooley that day.

Chapter Ten An interview with Larry Aggens, one of Tom's best friends. This relates the time in 1960 when Tom came to Chicago and invited him to come to the Conrad Hilton Hotel. Larry had a date and brought her along.
